A friend of mine just emailed me a truly horrifying video:
The video, from Koch Brothers Exposed, tells the story of people in Crossett, down in Ashley County, who have been exposed to heavy pollution being dumped into the local river by Georgia-Pacific, which is owned by Koch Industries. The video shows a water filled with toxic sludge that’s killing trees and giving off a thick, toxic cloud. It details the story of people living by the river, people who have never smoked a cigarette a day in their life dying from lung cancer. It’s become a ghastly epidemic, with whole families wiped out by the pollution induced disease.
It gets worse. Georgia-Pacific is a huge employer in Crossett. A lot of these folks see their very lives depending on the same people who are killing them, and that’s a hard thing to fight back against. What’s more, the whole political system is corrupted by the influence of corporate money, buying off pretty much every elected representative these poor souls have. It’s a truly frightening example of how dangerous the corruption of our political system by the wealthy and the powerful is, and how it has real world effects, often costing the lives of human beings. Think about it-how many Arkansas politicians rail on the EPA? How many Arkansas politicians fight sensible regulations to protect our air and water?
This is why.
Welcome to the Koch Brother’s Arkansas. Be sure to wear a face mask and don’t drink the water.
