“Typically, Bill doesn’t have the courage to attack Senator Lincoln under his own name,” said Steve Patterson, Lincoln for Senate Campaign Manager. “He allows a front group formed a few days ago by national labor unions to do his dirty work. When the ad states that Senator Lincoln is ‘not for us,’ it is true that Senator Lincoln answers to Arkansas, not to the national labor unions.
“Arkansans aren’t going to be fooled. While Bill postures against special interests, he strikes a shady deal with some of the most powerful special interests in Washington who agreed to use workers’ dues to repay his outstanding debt from his last campaign, and carry out his attacks on Senator Lincoln.”
Hear that? Working people are a special interest. Now sure, you could make the argument that unions represent a “special interest” as compared to a vague, general interest, but anyone with a brain in their skull has to admit that there is a difference between organized working people and a big business PAC dumping corporate profits into the political system to shape legislation so that it will enrich themselves-something I’m sure you’re not about to hear Mr. Patterson complain about. But really, the Lincoln campaign is showing its stripes here. This isn’t just a random staffer-it’s her campaign manager dissing the labor movement and working people coming together to protect their lives and pocket books-that says everything about this campaign’s values and who they’re standing up for that you need to know. Workers who want health care reform or protections against work place intimidation are a special interest. The people that would benefit from the estate tax cut Lincoln’s fought for all her career, the big insurance companies that are going to benefit from her health care reform antics, the polluters against climate legislation, and the host of other big business interests that have benefited from Lincoln’s career are not. So, now that Senator Antoinette’s campaign manager just told us all to go eat cake, how about we tell him and his boss to go eat dirt.
